Welcome to 'Encountered Images' - Malcolm McMillan's digital photography website.

You are at the Home Page

The photographs are organised into several 'albums' eg. 'Hull, Hell, and Halifax', 'landscape' etc. To see all the images in an album go directly to the main GALLERIES. You will be able to view thumbnails or choose to view them at a LARGER scale.
You will find a brief introduction to each album, below. Clicking on the "Photo Pages" link above will take you to pages with more selected photographs, and comments, from each album.
I hope you, too, encounter something of interest. I would welcome comment on any of the images - contact form .

ALBUM - MANIPULATED IMAGES

Experimental images which may have been manipulated in Photoshop including old photographs which have been scanned and digitally restored.

More digital restoration.

Restored group photo (which includes my grandmother) on ship bound for Canada - dated May 12th 1911. Probably leaving Scotland, most likely Glasgow. I would be very interested to find out which vessel. (Mouseover to see the restoration)

ALBUM - HULL, HELL, AND HALIFAX

I was brought up in Halifax, West Yorkshire, but spent 3 formative years in Hull studying Art. It would have been convenient but unfair and inaccurate to describe the rest of my life as Hell, although we all have our moments... So far this bit contains images only from Hull and Halifax....

Most photographs on this site have been taken with a Nikon D70 but most in this album, like the one below, arise out of scanned rediscovered B+W 35mm. negs. taken some years ago.

ALBUM - MORRIS DANCING

In recent times I have been drawn into the hitherto 'foreign' world of 'Morris Dancing' as a ready vehicle for photography.

ALBUM - FLORA AND FAUNA

One of the pleasures of an English garden is the variety of flora and fauna which can be found throughout the seasons - many of the images here are from my garden. These include images from a series recording the remarkable autumnal colours of the smoke tree. See more here. Colours as seen - no manipulation!

ALBUM - LANDSCAPE

It is impossible to find an area of landscape which has not been affected by human activity, hence this album also contains images of manufactured objects and urban environments. Of course much of the interest, and sometimes 'beauty' in landscape arises out of human intervention (often unintentional). Many of the images, therefore, reflect past activity. A recurring theme records the traces left by human activity within the landscape, sometimes preserved, often abandoned.

Why 'Encountered'?

An 'encounter ' can be a casual or unexpected meeting, which, to some extent, describes my approach to Photography. I find interest in meeting the unexpected or unanticipated, both in terms of the content, and the form, of the photograph.

Digital processing facilitates an immediate response to capturing an image, but also infinite possibilities for experimentation in processing, sometimes leading to unexpected results.

An 'encounter' can also mean a 'battle' or engagement with an enemy - It isn't always easy!
